Mainly papers of William Hale, Sr., merchant and political leader, and his son, William Hale, Jr., merchant, both of Dover, N.H., and records of family business interests. The bulk of the collection consists of the records of a store in Dover, N.H. operated by George Piper and William Hale, Jr. George Piper dealt in general merchandise in the 1820's; by 1835 William Hale, Jr. was specializing in hardware. There are ledgers, daybooks, cash books, bill books, and letter books. Records of other Hale family interests include: Frederick Mordantt Bell, general store ledger, 1773-1774; Samuel and William Hale, general store daybook, 1787-1789, Barrington, N.H.; William Hale, Sr., attorney, ledger, 1790-1804; Joseph Smith, general store and lumber account books, 1806-1810; William Hale, with A.S. Chadbourne, general store, 1813-1826; a drug store, 1823-1826; Samuel and William Hale, estate accounts, 1823-1848; William Hale, farming, 1827-1848, Lee, N.H.; William Hale, Jr., family and personal accounts, 1829-1856. There are also fifteen volumes of ledgers and daybooks, 1868-1886, of the Bellamy Grist Mill, Dover, with which William Hale, Jr. was connected.
